I would like to be a part of the group approaching the forest service as iPhone Report has suggested and you have reported. How can an individual help?
It's quite sad what has happened with our winter recreation opportunities in the Bighorns! This is why it takes a group of us together expressing to everyone(especially local County officials, and the Forest Service) that we support and enjoy our local areas, and want them to remain ontop of our beautiful Bighorns! Tomorrow we talk to Big Horn County again, then we'll be back to Sheridan! Join us!
The people on the rec side of the forest service are all about opening both areas on our mountain again. It's just going to take slit of support that we have heard about but it hasn't showed up yet. The reason the butte is getting closer to opening is because of a really good public group that is taking advantage if their ability to gain interest among people that aren't in the loop. So instead of talking about it on here why don't you either start a group for this ski hill or join inon the antelope butte one.
Anonymous on April1, The problem is that people who like to ski will support it re-opening. Those who don't will not support it or be ambivalent or even happy that it is not reopening. If there are enough interested they can sign petitions, phone or e-mail the forest and show that there is enough interest in keeping this ski area open. And then money will be needed.
It would seem to make sense to keep this area open rather than let it fall into ruin while a dilapidated Antelope Butte is opened. I do not know the whole story with the legal and financial issues behind the whole McCotter issue. But there are enough boarders/skiers interested that it seems like it should be open. Maybe the forest recreation people would consider something.
Would you rather have it close and save the surrounding area or let them keep dumping sewage into the creek? If you chose the latter, you are a evil person.
let go of it its gonna close sooner rather than later.
bh national forest or bs national forest. i`m mad cuz the bs forest is making them close!
It not the forest services fault, trust me I work for the bighorn national forest. The problem was the owners, they couldn't handle the required improvements to the grounds. There are so many problems with the lodge and area it is sickening. It's almost as bad as what happened with antelope butte on the north side.
I would agree with Christian. It would be a shame to see it eliminated. Especially if all the equipment is there. I've heard this tiny little mountain actually gets some decent snow some years.
It would be a shame to see skiing eliminated from this area. This is where i first attempted sking and from that one experiance have found a lifelong activity that keeps me healthy and sane durring the ling winter months. I would hope that the NFS sould consider a non-profit entity running the site. A good example of one that does in Alpenglow Ski Area near Anchorage Alaska. It is opperated on Military land just East of the city.
I understand that it is difficult to make money at a ski resort and to make ends meet. With Big Horn though all the equipment is there including snowmaking, grooming, two lifts and a nice lodge from what I saw when I was there. Is there any way that the BH National Forest would consider letting a group run the area for non-profit or are they set on eliminating skiing from the Big Horns.
You folks who were swindled must pursue further. Begin by locating others who had their money for passes taken, go to the local magistrate, and file charges! If that does not work, locate the "owner" via PI or other professional services, get everyone together, and pay this thief a little visit. Insist he reimburse you or place him under citizen's arrest on the spot. INSIST on justice!
The National forest Service for the Big Horn Mountains is responsible for ensuring ski access for people in the area. The ranger in charge of this forest needs to be fired now!!
Did the owner McCotter take the money and run for passes sold last season? Did anyone by the ski area? Their web site is out of date and phone numbers are disconnected. Do those who purchased passes last season get a refund?
The owners of Big Horn are continueing to run a great area into the ground. Last Spring they offered overpriced ski deals for season passes and now we have heard they have run with the money. Besides destroying Deer Haven and Meadowlark Lodges they have taken a great family ski area, tried to make it a "resort" and the Big Horn mountains will have lost another ski area. Thanks McCotter
Big Horn's had great family/large group rates in the past but they have continued to go up. Its getting to the point where it might be better to go elsewhere for more trails/snow for not much more cost including fuel. Big Horn will price themselves out of some loyal customers especially if some smaller ski areas open back up.
Big Horn is doing a great job of running lifts, grooming and making snow when needed. A great family ski area for those of us that have season passes which were an incredibly good deal. We have invited others along though and they are going other places to pay 40 plus dollars for a one day pass. I think the Big Horn is losing some business there. Good Staff!
This is a small area, but has great potential. Ideal for family skiing, there was something for everyone. Nice lodge and friendly staff!! A+ for efforts!!
Ski area was nice but I couldn't hardly justify paying $42.00 for 800 verticle feet. Hope they get the lodge stocked up on food and beverages.
