The larger and perhaps more well-known half of the Saint-Sauveur and Mont Avila twosome, Mont Saint-Sauveur shares a ridgeline and similar topography with its smaller sibling, but the similarities mostly end there. It has a longer season (October 31 to May 11 recently), greater vertical (700" compared to 615"), more terrain (142 acres vs. 35), more trails (38 rather than 11), and more uphill capacity (about 10,000 more people per hour.) But whereas Avila (despite a small condo cluster) is primarily a day/night use and snowplay area, Saint-Sauveur is a small but complete resort.

Four detachable quads provide the backbone of the uphill transport, with a fixed-grip quad, a triple, a double, and a magic carpet (the latter serves a semi-detached beginner area) to handle any overflow.

Like Avila, the toughest terrain runs right down the middle, flanked on either side by easier stuff. Thirty of the 38 trails are lighted, as is a large terrain park.

You"ll find many of the amenities you might expect at a larger resort, including slopeside lodging and child care. What you won"t find is a large mountain with a confusing layout, nor is it necessary to traverse to get from one end to the other.

Virtually every alpine area in Quebec features a professional snowsports school, and Saint-Sauveur is no exception. Taking a lesson is part of the scene, and you"ll find plenty of evidence of that here - and maybe even a little inspiration to take one yourself.
