Even wider than its name, Mount St. Louis Moonstone is spread over a long ridge. It covers 165 acres of terrain, and to make sure no one has to stand in line too long to get to it, employs an impressive line-up of lifts. Two six-packs, a detachable quad, three quads, three triples, a double and three surface lifts keep the crowds moving and dispersed. With more than 30 trails, a ½ pipe and terrain park (the pipe and park, incidentally, are served by their own quad) there"s bound to be something to keep skiers and riders of all stripes happy. Snowmaking covers nearly all the terrain, and the pipe and park is groomed by specialized equipment.

The snow school offers all sorts of programs, from a full range of private lessons to eight-week ski or snowboard lessons for little kids, juniors, teens, and adults. There are also racing programs, and for those 15 or older, an "Assistant Pro Program" that prepares skiers and riders for eventual professional (CSIA) certification.

Two base lodges are necessary to cover the territory; both offer food service (the main lodge has two cafeterias) and a bar. In the main lodge are all Guest Services. There"s also a large rental shop, retail shop, and repair.

There is no lodging at the hill, but the surrounding area is jam-packed with it. At least a dozen B&Bs are within 10 minutes, and there are many motels and inns from which to choose. The restaurant scene offers a fair number of options, and the town of Barrie (62,000) is under 20 minutes from the slopes. There you"ll find shopping, good regional cuisine, and cultural attractions.

A typical season at MSLM runs from mid-December well into March. Unlike many areas similarly located, night skiing and riding isn"t offered.
