A handy 21 miles from Boulder and 47 from Denver, Eldora has been a favorite with locals since it opened in 1962. You don't even have to drive to get there if you live in Boulder-there's RTD daily bus service that drops you off at the lodge. But Eldora is a favorite for more reasons than its accessibility. There are a slew of family-friendly programs for all ages, starting with "Eldorables" for kids four to six and ranging up to special women's programs and seminars. There's an affordable family season pass, too. Best of all there's terrain for the whole family, a great deal of which (all the stuff that can be groomed) covered by snowmaking, on a manageable 680 acres and 1500 feet of vertical. Plus, the Eldora Nordic Center with 45 kilometers of ski and snowshoe trails is right at the main base area. The beginner terrain is conveniently located right above the base lodge in its own little area, Little Hawk Family Zone, while above it and to its right (as you look up the mountain) is the core of the intermediate terrain. This blue square territory is mixed with a few blacks until you get to Corona Bowl, which is solidly advanced and expert terrain. Families or groups that fall into the intermediate-to-advanced category can happily spend the day on Challenge Mountain and Indian Peak. For the freestyle crowd, Eldora offers a 600 foot pipe with 20 foot walls that gets hand-tended most days at lunch time. There's also a varied terrain park with up to a dozen features. As noted above, Eldora also caters to families or groups with different interests by offering an excellent cross-country network. The 45 km of trails run through forests and alpine meadows, and the trails are groomed for classic, skate, and snowshoes. A full line of rental gear and professional instruction are available. There are four restaurants on the mountain, including one each at the top of Corona Bowl and Indian Peaks. Off the mountain, and especially in the Boulder area, there are dining and lodging choices galore, at all price points. Best of all, the trip between Eldora's on-slope fun and Boulder's off-slope amenities are only a 30-minute bus ride.
